Climate consultant warns: Britain may find difficultly in meeting the 2035 climate target

According to a report on the UK's "New Scientist" website on the 23rd, the UK's senior climate adviser warned that since effective government policies can only solve one-fifth of the required emission reductions, it may be difficult for the UK to achieve the 2035 climate target.

Chris Stark of the Climate Change Committee (CCC), an independent public agency that advises the British government, said: "We are very worried about the current state of the UK (emissions reduction actions)."

The organization stated in the "Emission Reduction Progress" report submitted to the parliament that key policies and strategies in all aspects, from decarbonization of heating to future North Sea oil production, have been postponed. On the whole, to achieve the legally binding goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 78% by 2035, 4/5 of the required emissions reductions lack a reliable policy.

In addition, the report pointed out that it is currently difficult for the UK to achieve the more urgent carbon emissions targets for 2025 and 2030, and achieving these short-term milestone targets is crucial for the country to achieve its ultimate goal of net zero emissions by 2050. . Stark welcomed the "Green Industrial Revolution Ten-Point Plan" proposed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in November last year. The plan aims to achieve the goal of "net zero emissions" of greenhouse gases by 2050. The sale of new gasoline and diesel cars was stopped. In addition, the United Kingdom proposed to supply electricity to each household through offshore wind power generation. By 2030, the United Kingdom will quadruple wind power generation to 40 GW.

Stark pointed out that in some areas, the government is on the right track, such as the construction of offshore wind farms and the implementation of tree planting plans, but in some areas the government is making slow progress. For example, the government encourages people to abandon the use of gas, oil-fired boilers, heat pumps, etc. However, there has been poor progress in developing its clean alternatives.

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said: "The current government has set many goals, but this report by the Climate Change Committee reveals that there are still huge differences between the reality and the goals. To avoid catastrophic climate change, What is needed is action, not promises and goals."
