Data storage faces new challenges

With the digital transformation and upgrading and the widespread application of new technologies, the storage of massive amounts of unstructured data has become a new challenge for the information industry. At the 2021 Big Data Industry Summit held recently, Jiang Chunyu, deputy director of the Big Data and Blockchain Department of the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, said that with the rapid development and popularization of the information industry, data storage technology has become An indispensable bottom base in the modern information industry architecture. However, the ever-increasing demand for data storage requires continuous development and evolution of data storage technology in terms of media, architecture, protocols, applications, and operation and maintenance models.

At present, the world is entering the era of digital economy, and various large, medium and small data centers have become the infrastructure of the digital economy. A large number of new technologies and new commercial applications will give rise to massive demand for edge computing and data centers. According to the Internet Data Center (IDC) forecast, in 2025, the global data volume will reach 175ZB (Zettabytes), with a 5-year compound annual growth rate of 31.8%, and data center storage will account for more than 70%. As an increasingly important storage medium for data centers, enterprise-level solid-state hard drives will ship 35.6 million units in 2020, with an average capacity of 2.7TB (terabytes), and total shipment capacity will increase by nearly 30% compared to 2019.

In the past, traditional storage applications were mainly traditional applications such as databases, files, and streaming media; today, driven by emerging technologies, storage mainly faces large-scale data application scenarios such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence. The limitations of traditional storage in terms of performance, security, and reliability have caused them to be very uncomfortable when facing these emerging applications.

Taking driverless driving as an example, the data shows that the amount of data generated per car per day is as high as tens of terabytes. Traditional storage can only be saved through repeated erasing, but it will cause the loss of a lot of valuable data. At the same time, traditional storage also has great drawbacks in management, and it is difficult to form an effective storage resource pool.

Compared with traditional storage, the inherent scalability and flexibility of the "software-defined storage" technology derived from large Internet data centers has brought revolutionary data storage methods to the era of new infrastructure.

"Popularly understood, software-defined storage is the use of unified software to manage and control storage hardware, that is, use general-purpose hardware for storage, but the functions and performance are determined by software." Xu Xin, CEO of data infrastructure technology platform provider Xingchen Tianhe Said that through the integration of large-scale Internet technology and modern enterprise storage functions, software-defined storage can realize the virtualization, abstraction, and automation of storage resources, and ultimately make the storage system flexible, elastic, and highly available.

According to Xu Xin, taking the new enterprise-level software-defined storage product recently released by Xingchen Tianhe as an example, through one storage operating system, two storage products, and one storage core technology, "one data center, one storage" can carry everything. Business scenarios solve data storage and management problems from complex structures such as cloud and terminal, and help government and enterprise organizations establish a unified data management platform for all protocols and scenarios to quickly integrate and manage data. In this process, the cost of digital transformation and upgrading of government and enterprise organizations can be reduced by one third, and the overall performance of the IT system can be improved by more than 50%.

Big Data

The industry believes that the rapid popularization of new applications has brought new application scenarios to storage. At the same time, with the development of the mobile Internet, the system architecture of enterprises has undergone great changes, leading to rapid expansion of enterprise storage requirements. The two will jointly drive the accelerated development of the software-defined storage market.

Some organizations predict that in the next five years, China's software-defined storage market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.1%. By 2024, the market capacity will be close to 2.46 billion U.S. dollars. While the market scale is being formed, the core supplier system is gradually established. According to IDC's market share rankings, Xingchen Tianhe, together with Huawei, New H3C, and Sugon form the first echelon of core suppliers in China's software-defined storage market.

"For the R&D of traditional storage infrastructure, China is about 20 years later than the foreign benchmarking technology companies; but in the field of software-defined storage, in terms of R&D and application, the start-up competition between China and the world’s leading manufacturers is roughly within 3 years. The same starting line." Xu Xin said that at present, domestic software-defined storage technology has considerable technical confidence, and through the dual innovation of domestic self-developed storage technology and digital subscription service model, it has empowered the sinking market.
